Community Cleaners
Beach Cleanups, Trash Pickups, and efforts to cleanup the areas the members of our communities utilize in their day to day lives. These type of cleanups are a staple in volunteer work, yet the areas we roam, live, and grow up on remain close to uninhabitable. If cleaning initiatives are so widespread, why are these problems still so prevalent? While not claiming to have the solution, members of our Environmental Health Outreach Program have quickly picked up on the fact that the areas needing cleaning were not cleaned. Through conducting our own surveys and research of various beaches, parks, and street areas in Southern California, the areas that already received frequent cleaning or were seldom used happened to be the target of many cleaning initiatives. This proved to be the case as some sections of Malibu, Laguna, and Santa Monica beach remained clean while others were left to the mercy of us beachgoers. Following this trend, we have taken up the mission to learn about the areas we plan to revitalize before jumping in head first. This way, we can make more informed decisions about the choices we make to take more impactful strides in cleaning our environment.
